Challenge

Scotland has set an ambitious target to phase out new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2035, driving a rapid shift towards electric vehicles (EVs). This transition requires a robust charging infrastructure to meet the growing demand for fast and convenient charging solutions. SSE Energy Solutions, recognizing this need, approached Heliox and partners to develop a fast-charging hub in the Dundee region.

Solution

The Myrekirk Roundabout charging hub, partially powered by Heliox features a total of 24 ultra-rapid charging bays, 8 of which will be powered by charge units of up to 360-kilowatts, with the remaining 16 bays featuring charge units of up to 150-kilowatts.

For this installation Heliox supplied total 4x Rapid 360kW All-In-One chargers (8 charging bays), capable of delivering up to 60 miles of range in just three minutes. Moreover, these units feature 'turn up and charge" system allowing for seamless contactless credit card payments. The combination of rapid charging with the easy accessibility due to location and easy payments play a significant role to reduces "range anxiety" – a major concern for EV drivers.

Results

The opening of Scotland's most powerful charging hub at Myrekirk, a collaboration between SSE Energy Solutions, Heliox and all partners, marks a significant milestone for the region. This state-of-the-art facility makes EV charging more accessible, contributing to a cleaner future for Dundee.

Project Description

Heliox and TU/e aim to develop an integrated solution that makes charging heavy electric vehicles accessible without negative consequences for local electricity networks. Together, we want to achieve this by developing and demonstrating a new, multiple and dynamic charging system for heavy electric vehicles that is equipped with software-controlled stabilization to absorb disturbances on the local energy grid.

The intended system will consist of a dynamically configurable charging system based on modules that can be connected in parallel, each with three 60 kW outputs. With this they want to be able to distribute the loading capacity dynamically over several vehicles. The charging system can therefore be used for opportunity charging up to 360 kW for a single vehicle as well as for regular charging of several vehicles.

In addition, smart software and a microcontroller board are being developed. The converter of the charging system can be used via this software to compensate for grid disturbances. The disturbances are neutralized via a low impedance path. This allows losses on the grid to be converted into usable energy, while improving the voltage quality of the grid. In fact, the system completely takes over the function of current power filters on the basis of smart control.
