Since s'Hertogenbosch deployed its first e-bus fleet in 2016, the city has continuously been one of the front-runners of e-mobility in the Netherlands, driving sustainability ahead. Dutch public transport operator Arriva was looking for a fast charging solution, which would connect the existing fast-charging infrastructure in the urban area with the suburbs and the residential area in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. A substantial noise reduction in the residential area combined with reduced lead times had to be tackled.
Heliox provided its latest innovation- the SMART switch and the Heliox OC 300 kW charger that provided the automatic switch system for charging two e-busses with the same charger. The new charging systems were placed in close proximity to the residential households and Heliox's liquid-cooled system provided the perfect measure to decrease noise levels. Since Heliox's fast-charging equipment complies with all the industry standards, adding new equipment to the already existing infrastructure exhibited Heliox's commitment towards interoperability and capability to charge any e-bus with Heliox's fast chargers.
This project is a great example of interoperability and the strength of open interfaces that connect already existing charging solutions with the new addition. Heliox's technology ensured that current solutions could support large-scale, multi-supplier projects without complications.
Heliox and TU/e aim to develop an integrated solution that makes charging heavy electric vehicles accessible without negative consequences for local electricity networks. Together, we want to achieve this by developing and demonstrating a new, multiple and dynamic charging system for heavy electric vehicles that is equipped with software-controlled stabilization to absorb disturbances on the local energy grid.
The intended system will consist of a dynamically configurable charging system based on modules that can be connected in parallel, each with three 60 kW outputs. With this they want to be able to distribute the loading capacity dynamically over several vehicles. The charging system can therefore be used for opportunity charging up to 360 kW for a single vehicle as well as for regular charging of several vehicles.
In addition, smart software and a microcontroller board are being developed. The converter of the charging system can be used via this software to compensate for grid disturbances. The disturbances are neutralized via a low impedance path. This allows losses on the grid to be converted into usable energy, while improving the voltage quality of the grid. In fact, the system completely takes over the function of current power filters on the basis of smart control.
